TCF Canada or TEF Canada: which should you take?

Both tests show your French level for Canadian immigration. Two different organisations publish them.

Published by TCF Vancouver · Updated

What do they have in common?

Both tests check listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Both link their results to the CEFR scale.

Canadian immigration authorities list both as approved tests. Confirm this on the official site before you book.

How do they differ?

France Éducation international publishes the TCF. The CCI Paris Île-de-France publishes the TEF.

The formats and scoring scales differ. A person can feel more at ease with one format than the other.

How do you choose?

Try a practice test from each publisher. Pick the format that feels clearer to you.

Check which test centres near you offer each exam, and how soon they have a seat.

Rules and fees change. Always check the official sources: France Éducation international and Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.

Questions

Can I take both tests?

Yes. You can take both, but you pay for each one.

Does one test score higher than the other?

No test is easier by design. Your result depends on your French and your comfort with the format.
